Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) with Google Authenticator or Authy
Secure your online accounts with an extra layer of protection. This guide walks you through setting up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) using Google Authenticator or Authy.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Download the Authenticator App
- Download and install the Google Authenticator (Android / Apple) or Authy app from your device's app store. Both are available on iOS and Android platforms.
Step 2: Access the 2FA Setup on Your Account
- Log into the account (website or app) where you wish to enable 2FA.
- Navigate to the security settings where 2FA setup is located. This is often found in the 'Account', 'Security', or 'Privacy' settings section.
Step 3: Begin the 2FA Setup Process
- Select the option to set up two-factor authentication. You may be prompted to choose between an SMS-based verification or an authenticator app. Choose

Step 4: Open the Authenticator App
- On your mobile device, open the Google Authenticator or Authy app.
- If it's your first time using the app, you might see instructions for setting up a new account. Otherwise, look for a plus sign (+) or an option that says

.
Step 5: Scan the QR Code
- Use the app's QR code scanner to scan the QR code displayed on your computer screen.
- If your device has trouble scanning the QR code, ensure good lighting and that your entire QR code is visible on the screen. Some apps also provide an option to enter the setup key manually if scanning fails.
Step 6: Enter the Verification Code
- After scanning, the app will add your account and display a six-digit code. This code refreshes every 30 seconds.
- Quickly enter this code in the provided field on your account's 2FA setup page.
Step 7: Finalize the Setup
- Submit or confirm the entered code. If entered correctly, the website or app will confirm that 2FA is now enabled for your account.
- Some services might provide backup codes at this stage. Be sure to save these backup codes in a secure location; they're crucial if you lose access to your authenticator app.
Step 8: Test the 2FA Setup
- To ensure everything is working, log out of your account and then log back in.
- You should be prompted for a code from your authenticator app after entering your username and password.
- Open the authenticator app, use the current code, and you should gain access to your account.
Note
- If using Authy, you have the additional option of backing up your accounts to the cloud. This can be beneficial if you change or lose your device.
- Always keep your recovery codes and mobile device secure to maintain the integrity of your 2FA setup.
